Types of Headache
Based on the primary causes of the pain, headaches are categorised into three types namely primary headache, secondary headache and cranial neuralgias, facial pain, and other headaches. The severity and the duration of headache are different for each type of headache.
Primary headaches: Primary headache is not due to any underlying conditions, but it is caused due to the problems with the structures of the head or due to the activities of the brain. Some of the common primary headaches include migraine, tension headaches and cluster headaches.
Secondary headaches: Secondary headaches are the result of some other medical conditions. Secondary headaches can be caused due to dental pain, sinus or brain tumour. External compressions headaches, ice cream headaches, medication overuse headaches are some of the types of secondary headaches.
If the secondary headache persists for a long time, it can be chronic. Treating the main cause of the headache can relieve the pain.
Cranial neuralgias, facial pain, and other headaches: Neuralgia refers to nerve pain. Cranial neuralgia is caused by the inflammation of the cranial nerve that carries signals from head and neck. Trigeminal neuralgia causes inflammation of cranial nerve, thereby leads to severe facial pain.
